When I first experienced the beauty of the Mandelbrot set and blowups of regions near its boundary, I thought "it's a pity the blind can't see this". I didn't do much about it at the time, but as technology improved and as I became more skilled at using it, I decided it was time to make The Fractals Artist Toolkit, which I had originally begun developing around 1995, accessible to the sight-impaired community. Several months ago I began working full-time toward that goal and completed the project very recently by updating the Toolkit, which began life as a Java applet, to a full-function Web app. You can find it at https://www.fractal-music.web.app.Â
Besides the usual features of blowing up regions near the boundary of the Mandelbrot set, creating Julia sets and color maps for coloring both types of images, saving and restoring images, the Toolkit can now speak the prompts, with or without a screen reader, create a grid over the main screen that the sight-impaired user can use to blowup regions in the neighborhood of the Mandelbrot set, and enable all users, sighted or not, to compose fractal music. The Help screen that's integrated into the Toolkit provides detailed instructions. A wired microphone is advised for the sight-impaired.
